If you’re anything like me, picking the perfect movie can be both exciting and a bit overwhelming. With endless options across genres, streaming platforms, and movie lists, figuring out what to watch can feel like a journey in itself.
1. Know your mood: Usually when I start choosing the movie I want to watch I start by my mood. What do I feel like watching? If I'm in a need of a laugh I'll watch a comedy or If I want an adrenaline rush I'll watch action or thriller. If you choose your movie by mood it'll most likely be enjoyable and satisfying.
2. Explore Genres and Directors You Enjoy: My favorite genres are easily action, rom-com and sci-fi. So the first thing I would do is look for those genres in movies. For example: action would make me choose Taken. Sci-fi would make me chose one of the Marvel or Star Wars movies. Romantic comedies would leave me toward How to Lose A Guy In 10 Days. Browse your favorite genres, actors and directors.
3. Ask for Recommendations: I know many movie fans so when I have a mental block on choosing a movie I'll ask one of my friends or family. I'll make it my business to know their favorite movies and shows. It'll bring more color to the things I'd normally choose.
4. Experiment Occasionally: Often I like to be very picky about my movie choices. I rewatch the movies I've seen countless of times because I'm scared to go out of my comfort zone. My father, Kristian, used to always get annoyed by me not agreeing to anything. After some time I realized the problem isn't in the movies being bad but more like me having an attitude problem. When I do choose a movie I've never seen before it usually ends up being extremely good.
5. A form: Sometimes me and my friends like to get together, eat and watch some movies. It's not easy to pick in a big group. I'm the designated friend to do a form which everyone will fill out. Ask for movie ideas or gather them there and then the one that gets the most votes will be the one you'll watch. Tip: This also works if you don't know what to do or eat!
But what to do when you can't choose between movies?
If I'm choosing a movie from two choices I secretly might have a favorite one which one I'd like to pick and I'm just too scared to make my decision.
1. Watch Trailers: Trailers give a quick snapshot of the movie’s tone, visuals, and pace. They’re great if you want a preview, but some people find them to contain spoilers. So if you don't want to know spoilers I'd advise to use some other tip.
2. Consider the Runtime: If you only have a short time, avoid movies with long runtimes and go for a shorter film, a comedy special, or even a documentary. Tailoring the movie to the time you have ensures you won’t feel rushed or miss out on parts of the plot. I like to have a timetable. It makes me relaxed. So if I've decided I only have an hour and half to watch a movie then I'll decide by it.
3. Do a random draw: Write the titles on the paper and put them in a hat. Shake it and you'll watch the one you got.
